Younger Recap: 5.09 ‘Honk If You’re Horny’

Younger Honk If You're Horny

Younger Honk If You're Horny

It looks as though history is repeating itself with more secrets, betrayals, and discoveries made in the latest episode of Younger.

During last week’s episode, Charles and Liza found themselves in their own little love bubble by doing the devil’s tango, stealing moments at work including footsies and a stairwell make-out sesh, and a cute little date. However, happiness can never last in a drama and so Pauline was brought back into the picture to stir up some trouble. Meanwhile, Zane was upset over being kicked off the Millennial book, however, after Jake went on a little tantrum spree after Kelsey asked to cool things off, he gave Kelsey all the credit for what she has done so far. Maggie also got some significant airtime when Malkie was brought back into the picture, and she found herself trying to prove herself to Malkie that she can let someone in.

In the new episode, it seems Lauren is Kelsey’s self-appointed publicist, and she announces to Kelsey, Josh, Maggie, and Malkie that Kelsey will be honoured as this year’s maverick at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards. Liza is missing from the picture as she’s at Charles’ enjoying a delicious home-cooked meal, a few kisses, and some reading time. She has been reading a manuscript written by Calvin Crigger, an ex-editor at Penguin and it’s a literary memoir about his drug addiction. The next day, she tells Kelsey it’s dark, but also has its humour at times, although Kelsey thinks he’s an asshole and that he will be a challenge, so she decides to pass. The pair then call Redmond (Michael Urie) to tell them they are passing, and he’s not happy as his client specifically wanted Millennial because of their Reese Witherspoon connection. Diana drops by Kelsey’s office after receiving a call from Lauren who is asking to meet with Diana, so she informs Diana and Liza about the award. Kelsey mentions that Lauren thinks Diana is cool, and this clearly makes Diana happy.

A Few Discoveries

Liza and Charles are having little moments in the office, before texting one another from across the room about their plans for that night. During their little dinner date at a quiet and dark restaurant, they run into Redmond so they try to cover by claiming she was bringing Charles a manuscript. The manuscript Liza so happens to have in her handbag is Calvin Crigger’s and then due to the situation, Liza has to leave. Since Charles is left alone now, Redmond tries to push the book further on Charles.

During this episode, we also see Diana and Enzo in bed at the end of their little romp around, and Diana mentions to Enzo afterwards about he’s tendency to “honk” during the big finale. Later on, Diana and Lauren are having drinks, and Lauren hopes to be her publicist also, except Diana doesn’t need one. Enzo picks Diana up, and Lauren recognises him from somewhere… Back at their apartment, Lauren shows Kelsey and Josh a vintage porn video—the first one she ever saw—and it just so happens Enzo was a honkin’ even back then.

A Stab In The Back

Kelsey receives a call from Redmond who is sending over the Crigger contract much to the confusion of Kelsey. It turns out Charles read the manuscript and sent an email saying Millennial is buying it. Kelsey confronts Liza about how Charles got the manuscript so Liza has to come clean and Kelsey believes it’s a big problem for her.

Diana, Kelsey, and Liza attend a meeting with self-made billionaire Quinn Tyler (Laura Benanti), who has written a book about women looking out for only themselves to succeed. After the revelation between Kelsey and Liza, Quinn’s words hit home and results in both of the girls being upset. Kelsey goes to see Charles and he says they’re going with Crigger and won’t be able to afford the Quinn Tyler book. Kelsey does a one-eighty and lets Charles know that’s she’s aware of his dinner with Liza…

A Declaration of Love

At the awards, Liza and Charles plan to talk afterwards, while Lauren approaches Diana about the video. She shows the video to Diana who is shocked, but Lauren managed to get the video down and gives the only copy to her on a USB, which results in an “I’ll call you” from Diana. Charles informs Kelsey that Crigger was desperate enough to work with Millennial that he’s essentially doing the book for free and she will get the money for Quinn’s book. However, he makes it very clear that she’s not to do what she did again.

Kelsey reluctantly says thank you about Liza going behind her back, which causes Liza to go into an eloquent speech about how she would never do that and they’ve had each other’s backs. If she had to choose between Kelsey and Charles, she’d choose Kelsey. This causes Kelsey to tear up, but before she has the chance to say anything, Lauren interrupts as they need someone else to introduce Kelsey. Thankfully, Quinn Tyler is there, however, she believes Kelsey should accept the award on her own. In a tear-inducing speech, Kelsey accepts the award for both herself and Liza as they are partners. Later on, Charles makes it clear that he doesn’t want anyone else knowing about their relationship since there’s a lot going on and that “nothing worth having comes easy”.

Overall Thoughts?

While many are pro-Josh or pro-Charles, I’m pro-Kelsey. I love the relationship Liza and Kelsey share and while it has certainly had rocky moments and the both of them have done questionable things, the pair always find their way back to one another. I’ll admit I even got a bit teary over Liza’s speech to Kelsey, especially after seeing Kelsey’s reaction because more than likely, Kelsey has never had words like that said to her. She’s been in relationships where she hasn’t fully been loved or appreciated for the person she is: Thad cheated on her, Bjornberg was married, Colin essentially used her, and Jake was like a little boy because he didn’t get his way. When she gave her speech and recognised Liza for all she’s done also, it was honestly one of the most touching things this series has done so far.

As for Charles and Liza, poor Liza is having to keep secrets once again and we’ve already seen before how people react to revelations down the track. Although most people know about Liza’s age now, I think it would be interesting for Diana to be copped with a double-whammy: finding out she’s with Charles and also her true age and history. It really could go either way, but I’d hope Diana would be the only person to just be like, so? Hopefully she would understand, and then perhaps we’ll see Liza and Diana spending more time together.
