Review: What Blooms from Dust by James Markert

What Blooms From Dust James Markert Review

What Blooms From Dust is about a man named Jeremiah Goodbye who is known as the “Coin Flip Killer”. When his death sentence gets blown away, literally, he has a second chance at life. He comes home to only find out that the infamous Dust Bowl has happened and gains an unlikely companion named Peter. The story shows what happened during the Dust Bowl in the small town of Nowhere, Oklahoma and in Jeremiah’s home life.

What Blooms From Dust James MarkertI could not put down this book, I just could not. It just sucked me in. I know that sounds very cliché, but hear me out. This majority of the characters in the book were African-American with possibly only three white characters, and it is the equivalent to the popular Black Panther movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe when it comes to books. I loved the family that was shown in the book. However, Jeremiah and his love interest I felt was unnecessary (I have said the same thing in my review from Big Water) because we are focusing on a family who is trying to save Jeremiah and we do not need to focus on that.

Throughout the novel, Jeremiah still needs to be hidden and saved since Jeremiah is still a criminal and the police are still looking for him. It is mentioned often in the book that the police are still looking for him and he needs to stay hidden.

Beware of the spoilers, but in the end, which still gives me chills, the family surrounds the police with guns because they want Jeremiah to be free. He did all of this stuff over the course of the novel that his family forgives him for a crime that he did not even commit.

Overall, this book was amazing to read and I highly recommend not only this book, but his other books, which includes A White Wind Blew, All Things Bright and Strange, The Angels’ Share, and The Hell That is Ice, as they have been getting nothing but amazing reviews. So do I recommend this author? Yes. Do I also recommend this book? Also yes.

Synopsis | Goodreads

Just as Jeremiah Goodbye is set to meet his fate in the electric chair, a tornado tears down the prison walls, and he is given a second chance at life. With the flip of a coin, he decides to return to his home town of Nowhere, Oklahoma, to settle the score with his twin brother Josiah. But upon his escape, he enters a world he doesn’t recognise—one that has been overtaken by the Dust Bowl. And the gift he once relied on to guide him is as unrecognisable as the path back to Nowhere.

After one jolt in Old Sparky, Jeremiah sees things more clearly and begins to question the mysterious circumstances surrounding the murders he was accused of. On his journey home, he accidentally rescues a young boy who follows him the rest of the way, and the pair arrive at their destination where they are greeted by fearful townspeople. When the Black Sunday storm hits the very next day, the residents of Nowhere finally begin to let the past few years of hardship bury them under the weight of all that dust.

Unlikely heroes, Jeremiah and his new companion, Peter Cotton, try to protect the townspeople from themselves, but Jeremiah must face his nightmares and free himself from the guilt of flipping the coin on those men who died.

Filled with mystery and magic, What Blooms from Dust is the story of finding hope in the midst of darkness and discovering the beauty of unexpected kindness.
