The Sun Is Also A Star Movie Adaptation

Young adult novelist Nicola Yoon has so far written two solo novels, and both are officially a movie! Her first novel, Everything Everything, was her very first novel about a girl who falls in love with the boy next door, but she is allergic to everything. Her second novel, The Sun is Also a Star, is about two people from very different backgrounds falling in love within a day. Yoon has been posting on her Instagram that Sun is becoming a movie and towards the end of July, she posted a throwback post from the first day filming the movie to reveal that they have finished filming! So, what does the public really know about this film??

Ry Russo-Young will be directing the film and he has previously directed six films including Lauren Oliver’s Before I Go. Tracy Oliver is the writer for this film and her credits include Girls Trip and Barber Shop.

Our two leading stars are Yara Shahidi (Black-ish and Grown-ish) playing Natasha and Charles Melton (Riverdale) will be playing Daniel Bae. Other actors include Gbenga Akinnagbe (Detroit, Independence Day: Resurgence) and Keong Sim (Olympus Has Fallen).

Since the film has only just wrapped with filming, the film is currently scheduled for release in May 2019, however, this may change over the next few months. Naturally there has been those concerned with Shahidi playing the role of Natasha since she is an African Iranian woman, while Natasha is supposed to be Jamaican. However, it is an adaptation after all and still provides great representation in the film industry.

Synopsis | Goodreads

Natasha: I’m a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I’m definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won’t be my story.

Daniel: I’ve always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents’ high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store—for both of us.

The Universe: Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?
