100 Movie Bucket List: ‘Se7en’

Seven Movie 1995 Poster

Written by Briah Krueger

All aboard the next film on our 100 Movie Bucket List; the 1995 mystery thriller, Se7en (directed by David Fincher). I hope you’re all strapped in and ready for a shuddering experience, this one was a wild ride!

With a young and brilliant cast consisting of Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow, and many other talented supporting cast members, this movie is guaranteed to throw you onto a rollercoaster of suspense, disgust, jaw-dropping, and ah-ha moments. But let’s get to those grimy details first.

Se7en is about a young detective (Brad Pitt) who moves to a new city with his high school sweetheart wife (Gwyneth Paltrow) and gets partnered up with another Detective who is retiring in just a week (Morgan Freeman). The two begin to work together, and soon discover they have fallen into the case of a serial killer. Despite their professional differences they work together to find this vicious master mind.

Later the two Detectives learn that this killer is killing people off according to the seven deadly sins: Gluttony, greed, sloth, lust, pride, envy, and wrath.

The introduction of the movie and leading up to the title screen is grimly and slightly disturbing to say the least; but quite fascinating, and if you pay attention closely you’ll find some foreshadowing sprinkled in there. Immediately and uncontrollably, as the leading cast members names begin to roll, you are wrapped into this oddly vague mystery with squinting eyes from the eerie images on the screen. This film really knows how to make you shiver!

This movie is beautiful in its own extremely demented way. With its gradual and smooth transitions, unique camera angles and cut scenes, the crafted camera work is simply stunning. Each set is shudder worthy, dark, and well laid out. Along with its chilling soundtrack to really bring that full on creepy affect that makes you want to pull your legs up to your chest and watch behind your knees (or maybe that’s just me).

Se7en’s plot is impressive to the point of mind blowing exclamations at the end of the movie; it is tremendously clever, spine-chilling, and filled with truly genuine shocking moments. There was one point during the movie where I actually shouted, you’re in for an uncanny treat!
Morgan Freeman gives us a compelling and telling performance, as young Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow deliver us immediate likeable and captivating characters.

And now time for the big reveal of the movie rating, this was a tough one to decide! Movie Junkies, a drum roll please, Se7en has rightfully earned a 9/10. Though part of me was holding off just a tad due to its incredibly dark nature, I couldn’t deprive the deserving score this movie has earned with its intriguing, suspense filled, gruesome mystery. This movie’s plot leaves you wanting more, creeps right under your skin, and doesn’t disappoint.

The recipe for Se7en is: Tons of tattered notebooks, undeveloped pictures, intense acting performances, hundreds of little trees car fresheners, dark and sinister crimes, one cardboard box, and plenty of spaghetti sauce cans.
