Overwatch: Doomfist is Here!

Written by Fabiola

The latest (big) update of Overwatch, the first person shooter of Blizzard Entertainment, is the brand new character Doomfist, aka Akande Ogundimu or the 25th character of the Overwatch roster.

But is he really news? Probably the answer is: Debatable. On one side, the character was never shown before mid July, but the community has been aware of Doomfist since the announcement trailer of Overwatch, during which Reaper and Widowmaker battle Winston and Tracer for the Doomfist gauntlet in display in a museum. A great trailer, as a side note. The video presenting Doomfist actually sheds some light: The (anti)hero was born with a name initially and the design, the visuals came afterwards. And they did not disappoint!

There is remarkable constant trait in Blizzard games: the games are created with a significant investment in terms of world building. The lore of the games is embedded in the dynamic of the game. For instance, the map of Numbani was originally released with the Doomfist gauntlet in the payload. About 4 months ago – when Orisa was introduced – the gauntlet was stolen and the payload changed to reflect the lore. Just fascinating.

Furthermore, Blizzard has a comic series dedicated to Overwatch and, upon the released of the latest character, Blizzard published a new comic (“Masquerade”) dedicated to Doomfist and the relationship with Talon.

So who is Doomfist and how does he fit in the overall story?

Doomfist is the name of the weirder of the gauntlet. In fact, the current Doomfist – yes, there were at least two Doomfist, one remembered as the scourge and one as the savior – is a villain; yet, his values honor and loyalty. So how can he be a villain? Well, he wants humankind to be as strong as possible (remember that the world in which Overwatch is built is the result of the Omnic war) and Doomfist believes that this strength will come only and exclusively through war. And how can one wage war in the world? Joining Talon and becoming one of the heads of the organization. Hence, Doomfist is one of the Talon leaders and has been recently “released” from prison after he was apprehended by Winston, Tracer and Genji. Yes, Talon is the organization of villains in Overwatch which is led by some characters (the only one we know is Reaper but in the recent comic issued by Blizzard there are several characters not known to us just yet!). In light of the above, it seems quite accurate Doomfist’s line in the game: “I am not your savior”. Just on point!

In terms of game play, Doomfist enters the offensive rooster and is a high mobility character with an impressive damage dealing capability made for diving. Pros have been playing the character since it was on PTR (public test realm) and they went nuts.

If you haven’t tried the character just yet, you should try the experience – Doomfist has now been released on the official platform this week!
