Rewind: Movies We Were Watching in 2008

Movies That Came Out In 2008 Twilight Iron Man

We were shocked to see the first month of 2018 fly by, but taking a trip down movie lane to ten years ago has us a little surprised!

Heading into the year of 2008, Hollywood saw the start of the Marvel Cinematic Universe begin with the release of Iron Man, along with DC dabbling in superheroes with The Dark Knight—which may have been the last decent film they brought out.

Then of course there was the paranormal phenomenon—Twilight. The film sent people crazy with the birth of “Twi-hards” and “Twi-moms” frothing over the teenage romance between a human and a vampire. This saw the next few years of movies, television and books being dominated by vampires, werewolves, witches and more.

We were also treated to more additions to franchises such as Indiana Jones, James Bond, Narnia and High School Musical.

Check out what movies came out in 2008 and tell us which one you enjoyed the most!

Twilight
Naturally we have to kick off our 2008 movie list with Twilight, because while we may groan at a mere mention, it did take the world by storm. Based on the best-selling novels by Stephenie Meyer, the world became obsessed with vampires and caused an onslaught of paranormal books, movies and television shows. And while we may knock it now (and yeah, I was one of those teens who saw it), it made a fortune and shot its actors straight into the middle of Hollywood. [/ts_one_half] [/ts_row]

The Dark Knight
The Dark Knight was probably the last time a decent film came out of DC Comics. While that’s a pretty strong statement, we have been subjected to the likes of Green Lantern and Suicide Squad. The film was also the second last role for the brilliant Australian actor, Heath Ledger. One thing I enjoyed immensely about this film is its darkness, but there’s still humour sprinkled throughout, unlike Marvel where there’s a joke thrown in every second line. [/ts_one_half] [/ts_row]

Iron Man
Speaking of Marvel, it’s crazy to think that ten years ago, Iron Man kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe and helped to cause an onslaught of superhero films and television shows. Now Marvel has released 17 films within the MCU with another two coming out this year, and not to mention all the other Marvel films outside of the MCU, including X-Men and Spider-Man. Liam Neeson Taken

Taken
Who knew this film starring Liam Neeson would surpass its budget by $200 million in the box office? While many praised its action, but dissed the brainless plot at the same time, it managed to add an additional two films to its name as well as a new prequel series on NBC that kicked off in 2017. But hey, that’s the fun of Hollywood, you never know how an audience will take to something! [/ts_one_half] [/ts_row]

Mamma Mia Movie Meryl Streep

Mamma Mia
A musical is always fun and Mamma Mia certainly was! Filled with songs from ABBA, this film just made you want to sing along and dance. We will be seeing the release of the much-anticipated sequel this year with Sophie falling pregnant, but all I ask is that (and I am sure that I can speak for others) for the love of all things ABBA, please don’t let Pierce Brosnan sing. Marley & Me
Now this was certainly a tear-jerker for 2008, and I think many would agree. Starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson, the film follows the couple adding a crazy dog to their family and follows them over the course of 14 years as their lives change from jobs, to children and relationship issues. Plus who doesn’t love a film with a cute doggy!? [/ts_one_half] [/ts_row]

Indiana Jones and The Crystal Skull

Indiana Jones and The Crystal Skull
I mean, that’s sort of how my eyes felt watching this, but many of us saw it to see what exactly they had in store for us with a few even enjoying the film. Reboots are always a tricky situation because you have so many dedicated fans who don’t want to see the franchise tarnished. Anyway, it could happen again with Spielberg eyeing off a fifth film… [/ts_one_half] [/ts_row]

Slumdog Millionaire
Who could forget this incredibly fun and feel-good movie? Slumdog Millionaire took many by surprise, especially the box office with it earning $377.9 million. Plus, what better way is there to end a movie than with a dance scene! [/ts_one_half] [/ts_row]

Indiana Jones and The Crystal Skull

Quantum of Solace
Bond, James Bond. Quantum of Solace marked the second Bond film starring Daniel Craig and it didn’t quite live up to its predecessor or the franchise. This particular film lacked the sophistication James Bond is known for and instead he became a mere action hero that we see in any regular film. Nevertheless, Daniel Craig was and still is a superb Bond. [/ts_one_half] [/ts_row]
