Jane The Virgin Recap: ‘Chapter Fifty-Four’

SPOILERS AHEAD

Inhala, exala. Inhala, exala.

Boy oh boy did Jane the Virgin bring out the big guns this week, and it wasn’t even a mid-season or season finale! ‘Chapter Fifty-Four’ included a major twist, which will change the series forever and perhaps you may have caught on from the very second the show replayed its catch up, as well as the opening scene.

The episode opens with Jane and Michael reminiscing over photos together when Jane gets a call about a job interview at a publishing company. For the rest of the gang: Michael’s exam is in a few days; Rogelio has an early screening of his new movie; Xo has to face a lunch with her boyfriend’s scary daughter; Petra is still struggling to bond with her children, and Rafael has meeting with his lawyer’s about his plea deal.

After Jane’s interview, she heads to the Villanueva house to pick up Mateo when Xo becomes sad her and Jane’s cycles are no longer synced. Uh-oh, Jane is late and could be pregnant!? She confronts Michael about the situation, and he becomes incredibly excited. Unfortunately Xo’s pregnancy test has expired, however, Aunt Flo arrives later on, so no baby Cordero just yet.

Meanwhile, Rogelio has first movie screening. During the preview, he realises they have cut his full-frontal nudity scene, which causes him to have a meltdown. Naturally with social media and phones, it’s all recorded and goes viral.

Petra continues to struggle with the twins, which continue to cry around her but are perfectly fine with her sister Anezka. She soon has a breakthough when the twins wake up in the middle of the night and she simply has to deal. The next morning, she is feeding them with ease and beaming with pride.

Rafael isn’t having a great time this episode. He finally tells Luisa he isn’t her real brother and shortly finds out the plea deal is off the table and he will accept the jail time. Luisa also introduces her new girlfriend to Raf, and he demands medical tests to ensure she isn’t Rose. BUT it is Rose, except they have based her appearance on another woman who will take the tests instead… Oh no!

Cue even more drama! Jane realises she dropped off the wrong package for her interview and misses out on the job. To ease her mind, and Michael’s, they head to the carnival, which is where they had a date earlier on in their relationship. They walk through the carnival reminiscing about their date and recall how nervous Michael was during their first date, because he wanted to be exclusive with Jane. The lovebirds continue to talk about changing their timeline and simply going with the flow.. Baby Cordero may be back on the horizon!
While on their date, Michael gives some insight into the work Jane’s interviewer gave her and so Jane being Jane, she goes back. She tells the publisher the non-fiction manuscript has fake details and can’t be published. The publisher tells Jane she passed test and got the job.

With everyone making changes in their lives, Rogelio will be starring in a reality TV show with Darcy and Xo announces her and Bruce will eventually move in together at some point, which will leave Alba on her own.

Throughout the entire episode, Michael hasn’t been feeling 100%, but simply chalked it up to nerves and still goes to his exam. At the end of the exam, Michael suddenly collapses on the ground. We then cut to Jane who is on the phone and the person on the other end notifies her that Michael has died as a result of his gunshot wound and high blood pressure. Jane breaks down and luckily Raf just walked in and runs to comfort her.

But it’s not over yet. A final scene shows Jane getting ready at what looks like the Villanueva house when suddenly a grown Mateo comes running in and a caption suddenly pops up stating it is THREE years later.

So, it looks like the second half of season three and possibly season four will be featuring a lot of flashbacks to show how they got to where they are now. Also, who’s getting married? The possibilities are endless!

Now, back to the that twist. How shocking! It did feel a little obvious that something was going to happen with all the reminiscing and dialogue which focused on tying up loose ends and reiterating feelings. But in a way, it was nice to see that Michael and Jane got to have that time together after he was initially shot in the season two finale. However, surely since he didn’t pass his police physical, a doctor would have told him about risks such as stress on his poor heart?

The show’s executive producer Jennie Urman penned a letter to fans about Michael’s death. The EP stated the decision to kill off Michael was planned early on, but thanks to Brett Dier, he got to stick around for much longer than originally planned.

Jane the Virgin returns next week and we just don’t know how we will cope until then.
