The Gifted Recap: 1.11 ‘3 X 1’

The Gifted 3 X 1
Written by Melissa Platt

After a short break, The Gifted returns with Episode 11, ‘3 X 1’ and kicks off with a flashback to Clarice on a date, where they are ambushed by purifiers. Her ‘boyfriend’ tells her to run, and the purifiers set her car on fire causing Clarice to flee.

Esme and her sisters are then seen talking with a man about the events that took place, and we find out they are working for a group called the Hellfire Club and they want to deal with the Hound project. There’s a problem that needs to be resolved and they offer to go back to the underground to fix it.

The humans and mutants hold a funeral for their loved ones—for Dreamer and Turner’s partner. Both are still, and even more so, willing to take the other down, but both sides are deeply mourning.

Turner later visits his daughter’s grave until he’s interrupted by Campbell. He explains why he turned on him, but says he still needs his support. Although Turner is weary, he still goes with Campbell as he’s also worried that Sentinel Services won’t take him back plus Tuner wants to test his program in the field.

At the underground, Johnny breaks down over Dreamer, but Clarice helps him get through it. For Lauren, she’s very angry and Reed says perhaps they should leave. However, Lauren and Andy protest, but their parents don’t want them to be caught in the crossfire.

Esme and her sisters turn up and they need the undergrounds help with the Hound program, and they refuse at first because of how she used them. Esme explains, which causes many to question what they should do, but Johnny puts it all on hold for now. However, Sage looks into Esme and her sisters and discovers their names are Esme, Phoebe and Sophie Frost, who are also known as the Stepford Cuckoos.

Lorna and Marcos are arguing again and afterwards, Marcos discovers the Struckers are getting ready to leave despite Andy and Lauren’s protests. When they get to the mid-point, they discover Wes is helping mutants to get across the border. Andy goes off on his own and runs into one of the Frost sisters, and she tries to convince him that they need the mutants. Meanwhile, Lauren is helping Wes and he comforts her about Dreamer and the two end up kissing.

Another Frost sister wakes Lorna to talk to her and we learn Lorna’s father was a big part of the Hellfire Club. The sister brings up Lorna’s baby to try to convince her to join them and after she leaves, we see that Lorna’s baby is changing her and that it’s making her stronger. Lorna and Marcos talk with Johnny about the sisters and after arguing for a bit, Marcos brings up how the X-Men chose them and believe in them. Sage interrupts them saying something big is about to happen.

The Strucker’s argue about leaving again when they’re ambushed by Campbell and his program—he’s found a way to combine two mutant’s power to make a great weapon. Andy is injured and Wes is using all his power to try to make them invisible. Sentinel Services is preparing to capture many with Johnny, Lorna, Marcos and Clarice on the way. Lorna almost takes a big fall, but Johnny catches her and they get out of the building. Running to the forest, the Frost sisters tell Andy how to get out and they all leave with them.

Turner and Campbell try to convince their director to let the program continue so they can get all the mutant and it’s approved for international use also.

Back at the underground, Wes is exhausted from using his powers for so long, while Andy wakes up and only has a concussion. The sisters talk about them coming together, but they head to the Hellfire Club where the manager tells them they need to tone it down. However, they say they needed to put the fear in the mutants, so they would join them, and they did.
