For The Love of ‘Grimm’!

Written by Natany Pacheco

Guilty of loving Grimms’ Fairy Tales and everything around that subject, I am often very selective and hard to please when it comes to watching a TV series, especially when it makes reference to that universe.

The television series Grimm was a very pleasant surprise for me and I was not expecting to like it, or even be addicted to it. The series follows Portland detective Nick Burkhardt who suddenly discovers he is part of a long line of special warriors. His mission is that he will have to protect his city, friends and his lovely girlfriend, Juliette, from magical creatures that seem like they’ve escaped straight from a book of fairy tales.

The name Grimm brings us a familiar feeling that transports us to our childhood. From fairy tales like Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella and many more, these were bedtime stories which have sparked the imagination in many. However, this series brings us a whole new interpretation of the tales with a much less ‘happily ever after’ and more ‘scary ever chapter’ with its dark and disturbing elements.

With its fantastic attention to detail and craftsmanship, we think you need to know a little more about the Grimm universe, but without any spoilers in case it piques your interest!

Nick has had a normal life in Portland working as a homicide detective, but when his Aunt comes back to the city, he starts seeing the truth about his world. He begins to learn about this ‘race’ called Wesen, which are humans with another side to them, an animal-based self which is controlled by instinct. These aren’t the only Wesen which exist though, as there are also some based on myths as well. Their species live among the humans, and they have strong rules and laws not to interact or ever tell humans about their existence. So how does Nick fit in? Normal people can only see them when they want to be seen, but what makes Nick different, and all other Grimms, is that he can see them when they are stressed or emotional.

The interaction between the main characters is appealing and the ‘not for children’ vibe also helps to hook you. The premise is solid and easy to grasp, and that alongside the scary details and disturbing dread notes makes this series a ‘must watch’ if you’re looking for a good story. The real beauty of the series is that the fairy tale influence is far from being literal. The creators have produced a rich and interesting universe giving a whole new perspective on the special beings the Grimm Brothers brought us so many years ago.

While the series finished up back in March, this makes it even better for binging all six seasons! If you’re interested, Grimm is available to watch on Netflix!
