Five Authors Whose Books I Automatically Buy

Leigh Bardugo Author

Written by Brooklyn Saliba

We all have our favourite authors—those wonderful word wielders whose new books we await with bated breath. These are the authors that we know will always write stories that feed our book loving souls! Now, I swear by quite a few favourite authors, ones I can hopefully always trust to spin yet another all-time favourite, but here are just five of my most favourite auto buy authors, whose books I will never cease to purchase almost instantaneously!

Auto Buy Authors

JK Rowling

Like many, I fell in love with the Wizarding World of Harry Potter as a child, and grew up with the series. To say that it influenced me as not only a reader, but as a person, would be an understatement. With each Harry Potter book, JK Rowling continued to create both amazing and also bone chillingly evil characters—whether its the boy Wizard Hero Harry Potter himself, or the wickedly evil Bellatrix Lestrange, who stops at nothing to see that her Master is pleased. Even though the Harry Potter series has finished, the magic is truly never over, and after all this time, I find myself stepping back into these amazing books, and experiencing those feelings that I felt oh so many years ago when first discovering the magic of Potter.

Despite the original Potter timeline contradictions given to us in The Cursed Child, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, JK Rowling truly keeps on giving to us Potterheads. She also does this in her Cormoran Strike series, which are published under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. Here she delves into the world of thriller/crime fiction and again gives us beguiling and wonderful characters with genius banter (why yes, I am referring to Robin and Strike themselves). I devoured the first three books in this series and cannot wait to see where the future leads them! And of course, to see what tales Jo weaves next!

Cassandra Clare

I feel like it’s rare that an author can write so many books set in the same world, and have them not feel repetitive or stale, but Cassandra Clare weaves her Shadowhunter Chronicles flawlessly! Whether it’s in Victorian London with Tessa, Jem, and Will (aka the most heartbreakingly beautiful trio in history), or with 16-year-old Clary just wanting to find her mother, yet being faced with the realisation that she is a Shadowhunter herself, and finally with parabatai Emma and Julian, Cassandra Clare is the gift that just keeps giving!

Along with Harry Potter, these books are among my most very favourite escapism forms, I love them first and foremost because when I pick up the book, any of them, they’re all amongst my favourites. I feel like I’m amongst friends, and I am so grateful that Clare has Shadowhunter novels planned until 2024, at least! It feels like it’ll be an end of an era once they cease, but us Shadowhunters have much to look forward to, and last year with Queen of Air and Darkness, I think the fandom can collectively admit that our hearts broke and were pieced back together bit by bit!

Jay Kristoff

Mister Kristoff is hands down my favourite male author. I feel like whatever he writes, whether it’s a space opera (The Illuminae Files, co-authored with Amie Kaufman), or his latest YA series (Lifel1k3), or his adult fantasy, The Nevernight Chronicles (I never thought I would happily give my heart away to a ruthless assassin, but there you are).

Jay Kristoff has this amazing way with words, where the reader feels like they’re projected right into the story and seeing everything being played out as the amazing epics that they are! Although I’m yet to read his Lotus Wars series, I cannot wait to because I’m sure they are going to be epic! I love how in Nevernight Jay Kristoff creates his main character, Mia Corvere, and practically gives away her fate on the first page! And in September this year, readers will finally have Dark Dawn in their hands, and I for one have never felt so scared about a final instalment in a series. Ever.

Leigh Bardugo

Another author that has created possibly one of the most vast and magical and fascinating worlds in YA is Leigh Bardugo and her Grisha trilogy, along with her Six of Crows duology and the King of Scars duology. When I first read Shadow and Bone, I was instantly blown away and mesmerised! It’s such a unique world and the detail that Leigh Bardugo puts into the books are captivating! I love how diverse she is with her characters too, including characters of colour, LGBT+ characters, those within same sex relationships, and my favourite plus-sized character such as Nina who promotes happy and healthy body image and being comfortable in herself!

Leigh Bardugo also wrote a short story collection called Language of Thorns, which allowed us to read what the Grisha characters would have read themselves! Just like Cassandra Clare, how she connects all these characters within this epically vast world is wonderful, and I can’t wait for more!

Sarah J Maas

When Throne of Glass ended last year, I feel like a book hadn’t left me feeling so much in a long time. It was the first time since Harry Potter that a favourite series of such epic proportions had ended! With the exception of Kingdom of Ash), I have read the Throne of Glass series multiple times, and I’m sure I’ll read them many more times! In the prequel novellas, The Assassins’ Blade, we meet young assassin Celaena Sardothien and Sam Cortland, and the series just gets more and more epic, with amazing and some not so amazing characters crossing paths with our Celaena, with revelations coming at us from all directions.

I had recently reread the Throne of Glass series and found myself admiring Celaena even more in each book, as I rediscovered the events of them. Sarah J Maas has also written one of my other favourite series, A Court of Thorns and Roses, which features the Seven Courts of Prythian and the world of fae.

Whether it’s writing about assassins or handsome fae men with large wingspans (*wink wink*), or a book loving assassin, or a beautiful female shape shifter, to whatever or whoever she thinks up next, I cannot wait to see what Sarah J Maas has in store for us readers!
