In January the casting of the two main leads was revealed, so now we can see the two young actors in action! The series follows Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph)—two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers, which are mysteriously linked to one another. Tandy possesses the ability to emit light daggers and Tyrone can engulf others in complete darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than apart, but their feelings for each other make their already complicated world even more challenging.
It is clear Freeform is playing to their strengths since the series is very teen-orientated. In the trailer, we see the series filled with teen angst and romance between two star-crossed lover with complicated pasts. While the trailer comes across as average, it does show some promise. Many seem disinterested in the series purely because it is a Freeform drama, but what can you do when your central characters are teenagers and are currently facing their ‘coming-of-age’ story. Some appear to be concerned about the brief and questionable visual effects show in the trailer, but often series will continue to work on them prior to the premiere of the show. This was done with Shadowhunters and potentially if Cloak & Dagger does well and receives a second season, most elements of a show—from the acting to special effects and dialogue—usually grow significantly.
Since the show was ordered straight-to-series, we will definitely be seeing ten one-hour episodes. The series will see Joe Pokaski (Underground, Heroes) serve as both showrunner and executive producer along with Jeph Loeb (Marvel’s head of Television) and Jim Chory serving as executive producers.
The series stars Oliva Holt, Aubrey Johnson, JD Evermore (Rectify), Gloria Reuben (Falling Skies) and Andrea Roth (Rogue).
Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger premieres early 2018 on Freeform.
